iOS 18: Apple's Latest Update Brings Customization, RCS Messaging, and New Features

Apple released iOS 18, the newest software version for iPhones, on Monday.

This is the biggest iPhone update from Apple for the year, but this rollout does not include the company's forthcoming artificial intelligence system, the so-called Apple Intelligence, touted in a series of new ads from Apple. Apple Intelligence will later be released to the public as a beta this fall, it said; the technology will come as part of a separate software update.

iOS 18 is going to feature an updated look and feel for the operating system of the iPhone. Amongst the new features being banner-ed this year, however, lies the ability to change the color of the icons on the home screen. In general, the new interface that will be introduced in the iPhone devices will boast numerous customization options.

Most of Apple's apps have been updated or redesigned individually. One of the bigger updates will see Apple's Messages app gain the ability to send RCS messages, turning the oft-maligned SMS text messages — known to some iPhone users as green bubbles — into a more modern experience with better photo quality and typing indicators.

The update is available for all iPhones released in 2018 or later. It's downloadable in Settings > General > Software Update.

Here are some of the big changes:

Users now have the freedom of dragging icons anywhere on the main screen. Users can place all their apps only on the edge of the screen, for example, or add only one app at the center of the screen.

The users can now edit app icons for either dark mode or any other preferred color.

The Control Center menu has been renovated by the company with the addition of more pages of shortcuts and options.

The Messages app now can bold or italicize text, and users can also react to messages with emojis instead of the old crop of options, which included a question mark, exclamation point, heart and thumbs-up.

Where Wi-Fi isn't available, supported devices can now send texts via a satellite.

A new Apple app, Passwords, is part of the update; it can store and create strong passwords for those sites and services.
